Ummm... there could be some LUN-related problems with combined

in short: try adding this line to /etc/modules.conf and reloading
the usb-storagea and scsi modules:
options scsi_mod max_scsi_luns=0xffffffff

Generally /var/log/messages knows when USB devices are moved
around :) (it's also at tty12, Ctrl-Alt-F12)
PS: sorry for no answer on the previous letter -- nothing to come
up with (yet?).
