Если бы дело было в look'n'feel 
(более неприглядного l'n'f, чем в xforms, трудно найти) ...

Суть в том, что LyX-qt формулы толком не умеет рисовать на экране.
До сих пор с этим справлялся только LyX-xforms.

Устали делать, решили выбросить ... Жаль.
Очень жаль. Ошибка в стратегии, IMHO
