присоветовали сделать make cloneconfig (результат: No rule to make 
target `cloneconfig') и make modules_prepare (отработало), после этого 
vmware-config.pl сказал:

The directory of kernel headers (version 2.6.16) does not match your 
running
kernel (version 2.6.16-std26-up-alt10).  Even if the module were to compile
successfully, it would not load into the running kernel.
