гляньте  /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Options опции на предмет отключения 2D ускорения
у меня вылечилось добавлением этих :

 Option "XaaNoMono8x8PatternFillRect"
# !!! Not critical !!! Clear screen before load X, it is plus !!!
# Disables accelerated fills of a rectangular region with a monochrome 
pattern.

 Option "XaaNoScanlineCPUToScreenColorExpandFill"
# !!! __Critical options__ !!! Error !!! Vert Line and hang !!!
# Disables accelerated rectangular expansion blits from source patterns \
# stored in system memory (one scan line at a time).
