Subject: [SA18251] Cpio Large File Size Handling Denial of Service Vulnerability

TITLE:
Cpio Large File Size Handling Denial of Service Vulnerability

SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA18251

VERIFY ADVISORY:
http://secunia.com/advisories/18251/

CRITICAL:
Not critical

IMPACT:
DoS

WHERE:
Local system

SOFTWARE:
cpio 2.x
http://secunia.com/product/887/

DESCRIPTION:
Richard Harms has reported a vulnerability in cpio, which potentially
can be exploited by malicious, local users to cause a DoS (Denial of
Service).

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error in the
"write_out_header()" function of "copyout.c" when creating the file
header. This can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow when the
size of the file that is backed up is more than 8 digits long.

Successful exploitation allows malicious users to e.g. disrupt
automated backup processes.

The vulnerability has been reported in version 2.6 and affects only
the 64-bit platforms.

SOLUTION:
Restrict the size of files that users can create on affected
systems.

Some Linux vendors have released updated packages.
