I am very pleased to announce the release of XFree86 4.4.0.  This release
comes almost exactly one year after the 4.3.0 release, and is the product
of the work of dedicated volunteers working through a changing and
challenging "political" environment.  I would like to thank all who have
contributed to this release, and all who continue to support XFree86
and the work of its volunteer developers.

While it is difficult for a volunteer group to make firm commitments to
future release schedules, it is our goal to have a shorter release cycle
for future releases.  With that goal in mind, the tentative schedule is
for a 4.5.0 release around August 2004.

Source, patches, and binaries for a range of platforms are available now
for download from our ftp site:

   ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/
   http://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/

We currently have binaries available for 17 platforms, and more will be
available over the next week.  If you find your favourite platform
missing, please let us know.  If you are not sure which binary set you
need, first download the "Xinstall.sh" script, and run:

   sh Xinstall.sh -check


Also, before downloading, check the 4.4.0 online documentation at:
