Для начала rm -rf ~/.vlc, проверить работает ли.

какое разрешение?
если 1024x768, то:

vlc --wx-last-config
'wx-config-last=(-1,0,0,1024,768)(0,0,0,521,85)(6,0,0,-1,150)'

если что-то ниже, то соответственные чиселки поправить.

Если человек выполняет свои обязанности, то пофиг сколько он работает и
как -- пусть хоть порнуху на рабочем месте смотрит. Если он при этом
хороший работник, то можно ему и монитор для этого счастья побольше
подарить :)
