На http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=379258 вроде в итоге
утверждается "Then the scanner turn. Launched Kooka, accepted the
hpaio scanner, scanned a preview, and then a full 1200 final scan."
Бишь должно заводиться.

i have a HP PSC 1315 and that works fine (after doing quite some
research) in ubuntu-linux with hplip & hpijs (not hpoj) installed

scanning works after adding the following line to
/etc/sane.d/dll.conf :

hpaio


and afaik with these devices you can also only scan if you have
not printed before and visa versa, otherwise you need to turn the
printer/scanner/copier off and on first
