Есть еще одна не совсем понятная вещь:

# apt-get install /home/john/RPM/RPMS/i586/dbmail-2.0.7-alt1.i586.rpm
Reading Package Lists... Done

           Depends: libauthdbmail.so.0 but it is not installable
           Depends: libmysqldbmail.so.0 but it is not installable
           Depends: libsortdbmail.so.0 but it is not installable

При этом:

# rpm -qipl /home/john/RPM/RPMS/i586/dbmail-2.0.7-alt1.i586.rpm | grep 
libauthdbmail
/usr/lib/dbmail/libauthdbmail.a

Прописывать provides libauthdbmail.so.0 в спеке? Почему тогда 
libdbmail.so.0 прописался сам?

Из вывода rpm -ba:

Provides: IMAPD = dbmail:2.0.7-alt1, POP3D = dbmail:2.0.7-alt1, 
libdbmail.so.0
