Вы не до конца manpage процитировали:
-a, --archive
	This is equivalent to -rlptgoD. It is a quick way of saying you want
	recursion and want to preserve everything.

В принципе, для рекурсии "-r" достаточно; согласитесь, что рекурсия - это
очевидно в данном случае.
