Seems that at least some synaptic version did that when trying to
"Update"; no way was found around except issuing "apt-get update"
by hand -- possibly followed by "apt-get install synaptic" to get
the current version (at least 0.47-alt2.2 seems to work right now
for me :-)

2 darkstar: we _need_ to doublecheck that flawed synaptic doesn't
make it to Compact!
