[Comm-en] broken alsa package?

I'm trying to help another ALT Linux user out.  He e-mailed me with this 
problem....

Every thing seemed to be going well but when I booted into Junior I got
a error message that the device/dev/dsp can,t be open {no such device.
So I went into synaptic and got this message 662 packages installed
1 broken alsa 24-smp#2.4.o_0.90rc7 advanced Linux sound architecture
{alsa drivers} broken.

Can anyone here suggest anything solutions for him?
